Connie Hayes was bitten by the event planning bug about 20 years ago as a volunteer with the Bull Durham Blues Festival. At that time in a totally different phase of planning, Connie was one of the few female jazz announcers on the radio in Durham. Her role with the Blues Festival was Volunteer Coordinator which she held for 5 years, and there she served on the committee to select the musical performers, recruit volunteers for the two day festival and sell T-shirts. Taking on another but larger role as a volunteer she planned a fundraising event for a local non-profit organization.

Her level of experience grew when she began planning international and domestic corporate sales meetings; she then became a member of MPI (Meeting Planners International). After moving to Charlotte she placed volunteer efforts first, working with a committee to plan trade shows through the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. She earned a meeting planning certificate with UNCC’s continuing education program. She then transitioned from corporate meetings to manage a private home for special events. Moving from a private home to theater as Community Programs Coordinator, she designed and planned educational theater seminars and workshops and managed summer music workshops for teens and elementary children.

Roni Ellis moved to Charlotte from Eastern North Carolina in 1996. A business major and graduate of East Carolina University, she has been involved in sales and marketing with companies large and small for many years. But her passion for people has always caused her to lean toward putting a smile on the face of others through event planning. For the last six years, she has been assisting clients in putting together Corporate Events (picnics, team building events and Christmas parties), Town Festivals, School Events (Elementary Schools through Colleges & Universities), Entertainment for Professional Sports Teams, Church Events, Family Reunions, Birthday Parties and Community Events (Family Fun Day, National Night Out, and Free Movie Nights). To help expand her knowledge in this industry she went back to school and received an Event Planner’s Certification from Central Piedmont Community College.

Roni likes to say, “My goal is always to work hard in creating that unique experience for each client by assisting them in putting together an event that is memorable. We want their friends and colleagues talking about the event long after it is over.” Roni enjoyed working with Debbie in arranging several events and she noticed that they both shared each other’s “passion for people.” Therefore, working for Events by Deb was a natural evolution.

Originally from Washington, DC, Roni lives in the Steele Creek area with her husband, Ron.
